| Job Description: | This is a Database Administrator I position. Database Administrator (DA) A DA is responsible for providing the technical capability for implementing and maintaining a secure, reliable and efficient database. Normally this position describes someone intimately involved with performance tuning, monitoring error logs, ensuring reliability & security and managing access to a multi-user, relational database. A DA will have a basic understanding of the database environment which includes hardware and the operating system (OS) software/language.
Technology: A DAs main technology emphasis should be to:
Maintain skill set required to do job
Maintain an awareness of trends within the technology industry
Install, configure, administer and optimize databases (hardware and operating systems)
Knowledge of Oracle, SQL Server, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Active Directory, Novell Netware, Novell NDS, UNIX and/or LINUX Network Operating Systems
Install, configure and maintain databases
Ensure optimal access and security
Monitor database utilization including data storage management, performance metrics and service levels
Ensure reliable backup and recovery of database
Develop and maintain an automated environment including reporting, event notifications and actions, software updates and service packs
Training:
Department of Army SA/NM Level I and II Courses
Department of Army SA/NM Level III Course
Recommended Certifications: Oracle Certification, Department of Army DITYVAP Certification, CompTIAs Security+

Activities: A DA 1 should have exhibited capabilities as a junior database administrator of a small personal relational database (less than one gigabyte). A basic demonstrated ability for the following duties is required: database design, creation, procedural language development and security. A basic understanding of the database environment is also required, to include hardware and the operating system (OS) software/language. All safety policies must be strictly adhered too.
Additional activities include:
Database integrity including constraints and triggers
Serve as Database Administrator for developmental and production cycles of Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS)
Basic applied knowledge of sizing and OS implications
Basic knowledge of database procedural language development
Ability to resolve data management issues including fragmentation, chaining, migration and extent growth
Basic knowledge of enterprise database tools
Basic knowledge of OS tools
